Tenafly Chabad Academy third graders have been learning about the digestive system! With lots of excitement, they engaged in a kinesthetic activity to learn about the process that happens when food enters the body. The students learned about the specific parts of the digestive system and were assigned to their specific tasks. With a bag of food that was wrapped up in newspapers and bags, each part of the system worked together to ‘digest’ the food. The ‘molars’ broke down the food by opening up the outer layer. The ‘saliva’ sprayed the food with water to make it easier to digest. The ‘pancreas’ continued the chemical digestion of the food by spraying more water. The ‘small intestine’ absorbed the nutrients and passed them to the blood. The ‘blood’ distributed the nutrients throughout the body. The ‘large intestine’ absorbed the the excess water by soaking it with sponges. The ‘rectum’ removed the waste by putting the remains of the food particles in the garbage can. It was a wonderful way for them to learn about and appreciate our complex and amazing digestive system!
