Many thanks to Rabbi Neil Winkler for his weekly commentary on the haftarah. Before the pandemic, I confess that I fell into the shul-going group Rabbi Winkler described that “failed to follow the (haftarah) reading carefully.” Typically the haftarah reading barely registered as a blip on my Shabbat learning radar. With the extra time afforded by the quarantine and even the subsequent abbreviated minyanim, I began devoting time to a careful reading of the weekly prophetic portion. Rabbi Winkler’s commentary has been an indispensable aide in understanding the haftarah, providing historical context, depth and current meaning to the words of the prophets. I plan on continuing to study the weekly haftarah and look forward to Rabbi Winkler’s “Bringing the Prophets to Life”!
