The Moriah 7th grade boys’ basketball team won its season opener versus RYNJ, 47-35, on Monday night, November 17th. Coming off of a big win against Solomon Schechter of Bergen County, RYNJ put up a strong fight against the YMSSA defending champs.
The game got off to a very slow start with the scoreboard showing a total of 8 points in the middle of the 1st quarter. However, Rafi Lewis, who finished with 12 points, quickly picked up the pace of the game and was unstoppable driving to the hoop. Then RYNJ had to contend with Schechter’s fast breaks and the Lewis-Shein combo.
Going into the half, RYNJ’s Shmulie Coates and Ikey Gutlove brought the game within reach, scoring 12 points each and pulling down a lot of rebounds. But RYNJ couldn’t get around 6-foot center Gaby Katz, and stopping him from blocking shots.
Overall, it was a great season opener, as both teams played their hearts out. We’re all looking forward to an exciting season.
