The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Akiva Gaisin

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize 8-year-old Akiva Gaisin as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The third grader at the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey showed off his skill-set at Camp Shalom this summer and at Sportstar Select at Camp Shalom the previous summer. When asked about Gaisin, Sportstar Select Director Steve Gutlove told the JL, “Akiva is a natural athlete with the desire to constantly work on his game. There is no ceiling for what Akiva can accomplish on the court.”

Akiva, congratulations on being recognized as Sportstar of the Week. Who is your role model and why?

My parents; They play sports with me and encourage me to work hard.

What is your favorite sport?

I really like playing and watching football, because I like tackling people and watching the games that are so exciting.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Getting a chance to pitch an inning in baseball this summer and striking out three batters.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Lamar Jackson, because he always jukes everyone out and gets the touchdown.

What is your pregame routine?

I don’t really have one, but I usually like to toss around a football to warm up. I like to practice pitching on my pitch back and playing catch. I also spend a lot of time playing basketball and working on my layup.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Playing t-ball in Bergenfield PAL when I was 4 years old and learning how to play baseball.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

I can’t think of one but I sometimes have dreams where I’m playing one-on-one with Anthony Davis.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Going to my first NFL game with my dad, grandfather and cousins. It was my first time in Giants stadium and we had seats very close to the field so I got to see everything up close. It was so exciting when the players came out onto the field with fireworks.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

I enjoy reading books and the sports section in the paper and I also like watching sports.
