The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize 16-year-old Annabel Silverman as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The sophomore at the Frisch School has worked very hard on her game earning her a spot on this past summer’s Hustle & Heart All Star team. When asked about Annabel, Frisch JV girls basketball coach Jah-Leah Ellis told the Jewish Link “I met Annabel at camp before the season and she took lessons with me. I could see that she had a drive to get better. She was doing great there and I didn’t even realize she was potentially going to be a player of mine. As a freshman she didn’t get as much playing time as I would’ve hoped because other girls really stepped up, but that didn’t stop her at all from working hard in practice. When her number was called in games she performed exactly how we wanted her to. And that was great. Because of how good of a teammate she is, her teammates were excited for her successful moments. And I 100% relate to that and felt joy from that because I had those moments in my playing career as well. If we end up getting to play this year I definitely think she will continue to grow and perform.”
Annabel, mazel tov on being recognized as Sportstar of the Week. What is your favorite sport and why?
I’ve played many sports over the years but basketball has always stood out to me. Something about sinking shots, the rush of energy during fast breaks and working with a team has really made it so enjoyable for me over the past few years.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Making the Frisch basketball team last year because there were tons of talented freshmen and sophomores trying out and I really didn’t think I had a chance against them.
What is your pregame routine?
Whether he’s in the stands waiting to cheer me on or on the phone, my dad always makes sure to give me a pep talk with advice before all of my games.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memories would actually be playing soccer and T-ball in kindergarten at a park around the block from my house.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
My weirdest sports memory was at a Yankee game when a home run was hit right into our section and as my dad tried to dive to get the ball someone’s drink spilled all over us.
What is your favorite sports memory?
My favorite sports memory was in fifth grade when my team won the MGBL league championship. It was my first ever competitive basketball league and I was extremely nervous. But, due to my amazing teammates and coaches’ encouragement, I was able to discover my love for basketball.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
I love watching Netflix and hanging out with friends!
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Getting to be in the Jewish Link! My grandfather is always joking and asking me when I’m going to be in the paper, I can’t wait to show this article to him!
