The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize 13-year-old Ava Katz as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The eighth grade student at The Moriah School has been on the Moriah girls basketball team the past two seasons and was a key contributor on the 9-1 team that reached the championship game back in 2019. Despite not having a yeshiva basketball season, Katz has continued to improve by practicing with her brothers in the backyard. When asked about Katz, former Moriah basketball coach Debbie Coby told The Jewish Link, “I loved coaching Ava. She always gave 100%. She was always able to come up with a big play when we needed it most. Her tenacious defense fed our fast-break offense and led to many easy baskets. Most importantly she always put team success ahead of individual accomplishments.” Wishing Ava much continued success, both on and off the court.
Ava, yasher koach on being recognized as Sportstar of the Week. Who is your role model and why?
My mom because she teaches me to be a better person every day and is always there to support me.
What is your favorite sport?
Basketball, because I like the feeling of running down the court and defending.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Making four 3-point shots in one game at Camp Lavi.
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
Kawhi Leonard because he was the underdog when his team beat the Warriors.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Scoring six goals in a soccer game when I was in fourth grade.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
Getting elbowed in the nose, while playing a basketball game at Hillel.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Hanging out with my friends and all of my cousins.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Reaching the championship game in sixth grade at Moriah.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Being recognized in The Jewish Link.
