The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Nechama Samet

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Nechama Samet as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 14-year-old Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey eighth grader was one of the many talented weapons on the MJDSBL eighth grade girls championship team. When asked about Nechama, RYNJ coach Shaina Gross told The Jewish Link, “Nechama is not a loud person but on the court her presence is known. When she is focused and game ready she dominates under the hoop. She uses her height well to grab rebounds on offense and defense. She always has her team’s best interest at heart. It was a pleasure coaching her in her last year at RYNJ.” RYNJ’s Middle School Girls Principal Morah Cindy Zucker added “Nechama is a shining star in the MSG who is admired for her exemplary midot, her modest demeanor and the warm smile with which she greets everyone.”

Nechama, congrats on the championship and for being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My parents because they motivate me to do my best and teach me the importance of being a team player. And they always support me through everything

What is your favorite sport?

Basketball, because it’s a team sport I like playing with my teammates. Basketball you can practice anywhere if you go on vacation and there is no hoop, you can practice dribbling or anything else. It’s also a sport that allows me to use my height as an advantage. Hey, even in the NBA being tall provides tremendous advantages.

What is your pregame routine?

I listen to music and stretch with my team.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment is finally being able to play on my school team two years after covid.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My brother Zevi. He’s the player I really enjoy watching and look up to.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Winning championships with the RYNJ Jaguars! Go Jaguars!

What is your earliest sports memory?

My older brother Zevi training me.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Hanging out with family and friends.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

Knowing that hard work really pays off. It also motivates me to continue to play and work harder to get better, and encourage others as well.
