The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Sammy Haberman as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Sammy is a sixth grader at Yeshivat Noam and recently completed a championship season in Rosalimsky Football League. When asked about Haberman, RFL Commissioner Rabbi Avi Rosalimsky told the Jewish Link, “Sammy is the quintessential athlete. He works hard, he plays hard and he helps his teammates get better at the same time. Sammy led his RFL team to a championship win with three touchdowns and two interceptions. But beyond his stellar performance, what stands out most about Sammy is his good sportsmanship and impeccable midot.”
Sammy, congrats on the championship and being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Who is your role model and why?
My older siblings because they are always there for me whether its on the court, to help with school or just to have fun.
What is your favorite sport?
Basketball and football—great team sports and fun.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Scoring a buzzer beater 3-pointer at Slapshots to win the game and getting three pick-sixes to help my team win the RFL championship.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Kevin Durant, because he worked really hard, is a really good person and was really good to his mom.
What is your earliest sports memory?
At age 4, my brothers Jonathan, Andrew and I were playing basketball and I scored my first foul shot.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Winning the family 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Florida on our Passover program.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
At camp I scored a 3-pointer on my own hoop.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Hanging out with family and friends.
What is your pregame routine?
Football: throw and catch the football with friends and sprinting.
Basketball: stretch/shoot 3s and foul shots/ball handling.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Being in The Jewish Link.
