The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Simcha Ochs as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Simcha is a rising sixth grader at the Yeshivas Beis Hillel of Passaic (YBH) and an all around great athlete. The 11-year-old Ochs loves playing ALL sports, but his favorites are football, basketball and baseball. While he loves a good competitive game, he is very much a team player who feels that everyone should be included. This summer when he was a league captain at camp he made sure to draft people of all levels, who he felt would work together well. He shows good sportsmanship by complimenting people not only when they make a good play but when they put in good effort even if it doesn’t always work in their favor.
Simcha, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week, who is your role model and why?
My role model is my 5th grade Rebbi, Rabbi Finkel. I feel like he memorized all of Shas, because whenever I would ask him a question, he would answer off the top of his head (for example) ‘Oh, it says that in Bava Metzia perek bais, daf kuf daled amud bais halfway through the first paragraph.’
What is your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is football because I enjoy QB’ing – I have a rule that I pass to the open people, even if they’re not always the best players and I don’t just throw it to the good ones.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
My greatest sports accomplishment was scoring five rushing touchdowns in one game.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
My favorite athlete is Saquon Barkley because he’s an amazing running back and he has a funny personality.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory was getting on to first base for the first time in Yiddle League
What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you while playing ball?
My weirdest sports memory was running the wrong way from third to second during my first season at Yiddle League, and causing everyone else to run backwards too.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
My favorite thing to do when I’m not playing sports is swimming.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
The best thing about being a sportstar is being part of a team where people rely on me, and I rely on them too.
