The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Zach Field

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize Zach Field as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 12-year-old is a seventh grader at the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey and was a key contributor to the BCFL 7/8 champion Chiefs team, including an insane late-game comeback on October 31 that spurred the Chiefs to victory. When asked about Field, RYNJ Middle School Principal Rabbi Avi Bernstein told The Jewish Link, “Zach is one of those students who is a star both on and off the court. He is an energetic, though soft-spoken, leader on the court, and can always be seen and heard encouraging others. Off the court, his smile and wholesomeness speak for themselves. Zach is one of those all-around players!”

Zach congrats on the BCFL championship and for being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Who is your role model and why?

My dad is my role model. He’s always smiling and nice to everyone. He also comes to my games whenever he can and gives me good tips.

What is your favorite sport?

Hockey, because it’s a sport where the whole team is involved in almost every play.

What is your pregame routine?

Depends on the sport: Hockey—people take shots off me. Football—stretch and catch passes. Baseball—have a catch. Basketball—shoot a round and practice layups and passing.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

When I was playing in the Yavneh Youth League a few years ago, I was playing in the infield and the batter hit the ball to the outfield. The outfielder caught it, but one of the runners was tagging up from third to home. The outfielder threw me the ball, I caught it with my bare hand, and I ran down and tagged the guy right before he got to home plate. After I tagged him, I quickly threw it to third base and the third baseman tagged the player running from second to third out for a triple play.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Lamar Jackson because I am a Ravens fan and he is their quarterback. He prefers to run the ball like I do when I play QB.

What is your favorite sports memory?

A few weeks ago, my mom took me to the Devils/Flames game—I’m a Flames fan—and surprised me with seats in the first row on the glass right behind the Flames’ bench. I got to fist bump a bunch of players, and Jacob Markstrom (the starting goalie) gave me a puck.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Playing indoor soccer at age 4.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Hanging out with my friends and playing video games.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

Being recognized in The Jewish Link.
