The Fabric of Life: Art Show at Kaplen JCC

Tenafly–The Fabric of Life exhibition will be on display at the Waltuch Gallery of the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, January 5–28, with a special opening reception on Tuesday, January 6 at 7:30 p.m.

These unique and colorful wall hangings are handmade by the members of Kishorit, a kibbutz in Israel’s Galilee for 160 adults with debilitating mental illnesses or developmental disabilities. Each piece is unique and tells its own story. Some are based on scenes from the artists’ personal lives, others on visceral emotions that the artists wanted to depict graphically, and still others are artistic explorations of color and line. All of the pieces are made with a great deal of patience and love. The creative process is used as a therapeutic tool as Kishorit members tell their own stories in their own voices. This exhibit exemplifies Israel’s allegiance to the field of Outsider Art as an important reminder to all of us that people with special needs also have special abilities.

Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.– 10 p.m.; Friday and Sunday, 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.; closed Saturday and Jewish holidays. Admission is free and open to the community. For more information contact Jessica Spiegel, 201-408-1426 or visit the JCC website at www.jccotp.org.
