The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Ami Wachsmanas this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The seventh grader at the Salanter Akiba Riverdale (SAR) Academy was a key contributor for the YMSSA seventh grade champion Sting basketball team. When asked about his high scoring big man, SAR seventh grade basketball coach and Athletic Director Jen Gleason told The Jewish Link, “Ami had a great season this year. He is a force in the middle of our defense and loads for teams to handle on the offensive glass. He works extremely hard and is always in the gym trying to get better. I’m excited to see what next year holds for Ami.”
Ami, congrats on the championship and on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?
My dad, He pushes me to be the best I can be in every area of my life.
What is your favorite sport?
Basketball, although you need some basic ability you can work really hard and build up your game.
What is your pregame routine?
Dribbling, around the world, free throws and mid-rangers.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Winning the seventh grade championship.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Usain Bolt. He shows how someone can succeed with hard work, determination and perseverance.
What is your earliest sports memory?
SAR first grade softball. It was my first time up at bat. I missed the first two pitches. On the third pitch I got a homerun.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
I was playing baseball. I was shortstop. Someone hit the ball. I ran to catch it but miscalculated the trajectory. The ball hit my mouth and then I caught it. I also caught my loose tooth that was knocked out. I got $2: $1 for the ball and $1 for the tooth.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Hang out with friends. Sometimes we cook lunch and then chill.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
I don’t think of myself as a sportstar. I’m a regular seventh grader who happens to be really tall.
