The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Avishai Englander as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 14-year-old eighth grader at Westchester Day School was a co-captain of the WDS floor hockey team and stepped up as team leader when his coach had to step away due to cancer treatment. A spectator told The Jewish Link, “Avishai is a mensch who ensures that each player feels like a true part of the team.”
Avishai, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?
My sports role model is my oldest brother, Ben, who is the reason I love to play and watch sports games. Ben has always taught me and talks to me about any sport or team. I would not be the player I am today if it was not for Ben who always gives me tips and practices with me in order for me to reach my highest capabilities.
What is your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is baseball because of all the different aspects of the game. Every position has a different job which gives you so many options to choose from, depending on how you want to affect the game.
What is your pregame routine?
Before games, I don’t really do much besides thinking about how I want to play that game and what I want to focus on.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
My greatest sports accomplishment is probably winning the HVHL (Hudson Valley Hockey League) ice hockey championship twice on the White Plains Plainsmen ice hockey team.
Who is your favorite athlete?
My favorite athlete is Pete Alonso because he is a great baseball player, he always plays hard and just wants to have fun, and he plays the game how it’s meant to be played.
What is your earliest sports memory?
One of my earliest sports memories is running around the bases at Citi Field when I was about 5-years-old.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
My favorite thing to do when not playing sports is hanging out with friends and doing DIY and construction projects.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
The best part about being a Sportstar is being able to talk about and relay everything I love about sports.
The Humble Toast Star of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Stars of the Week to [email protected].
