The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Benny Leben as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 8-year-old, third grader at the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey was one of the leaders of the Bergen County Flag Football League’s La Cucina De Nava Saints that came so close to upsetting the Colts in the fall championship game. When asked about Benny, BCFL Co-Commissioner Steve Gutlove told The Jewish Link, “Benny is a big play magnet. Whether it’s making a huge catch, splitting the defenders on a run upfield or grabbing the flag on defense, Benny is always in the center of it all. For me one of the highlights of the 2023 fall season was Benny’s game winning catch in the semifinals. To quote one of the team mom’s Jillian Sanchez, who was the first to storm the field and give Leben a high five, “Benny is all heart.” Benny we look forward to continued success from you in the BCFL Spring 2024 season and beyond.”
Benny, congrats on a great BCFL season and on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who are your role models and why?
My father, because he teaches me how to be a better player.
What is your favorite sport?
Football. I love catching passes and running with the ball to try and score a touchdown.
What is your pregame routine?
Usually a Sammy’s bagel, and practice with my team.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Leading off for the 8u Teaneck Travel Baseball team.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Travis Kelce. Because he’s a great route runner and always catches the ball.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Playing basement baseball with my brother and father.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Probably being Sportstar of the Week 🙂
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Watching NFL highlights.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Showing myself that hard work pays off.
