The Humble Toast Sportstar of the Week: Caleb Block

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Caleb Block as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The fourth grader at Yavneh Academy lives and breathes sports. His favorite sports are football, basketball and baseball. He is currently playing gridiron football and TBO travel/fall ball. When asked about Caleb, his TBO and 10U travel baseball team coach Shlomo Yaros told The Jewish Link, “Caleb has been a great player for our team in both TBO and travel league. He is energetic, always plays hard and has a great attitude!” Caleb’s football coach, Peter, added, “Caleb is our best player on both offense and defense, but what impresses me most is how good of a teammate he is. Just the other week, we were badly beating another team and Caleb already had scored six touchdowns during the game. After he caught a deep pass, Caleb, unprompted, decided to lateral to his teammate so that his teammate could score his first touchdown of the season. That is what team sports is all about!”

Caleb, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My dad, because he has taught me how to play all the sports that I play, has shown me that practice and commitment pay off and also always encourages me to push myself to try harder and get better. He has a lot of trophies, but he told me that if I keep practicing I will one day have even more than he has.

What is your favorite sport?

Football is my favorite sport. I both enjoy watching it, and even more, playing it. Since my birthday is in October, it is especially fun being able to watch football around that time.

What is your pregame routine?

I don’t have one, but it’s making me think I should create one!

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

I play in the Teaneck TBO 10U travel fall ball league. We just finished our regular season last week and went undefeated! We are about to start the playoffs next week. I finished the season with a batting average of.538 and an on base percentage of.750, which my dad said is very good.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Sauce Gardener, because he plays lockdown defense for the New York Jets, which is my favorite football team.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Playing baseball with my Zaida and my Zaidy when I was 5 years old at their houses.

What is the weirdest thing that happened to you while playing ball?

This past summer in Camp Slapshots, I fell down, while catching a football. Luckily I got a touchdown, but also fractured my wrist!

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Fantasy football! I also like to watch sports clips and play with my friends.

What is your favorite sports memory?

I went with dad, my Zaida and my uncle to the Mets game where they beat the Dodgers. Edwin Diaz got the save and Timmy Trumpet played Narco live at the game. The stadium was going crazy—it was epic!

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

I get to be in The Jewish Link!

The Humble Toast Sportstar of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week to [email protected].
