The Humble Toast Sportstar Of the Week: Charlie Magence

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Charlie Magence as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 11-year-old rising sixth grader at SAR Academy is coming off a phenomenal year. He won back-to-back BCFL championships as a member of the Cardinals (fall 2022) and Buccaneers (spring 2022), won a TBO championship and was MVP of TABC Jr Hockey floor hockey in fall. When asked about Charlie, Coach Ainsworth of Minott Athletics told The Jewish Link, “I’ve trained Charlie in basketball, football and baseball for the past few years. It’s not just the sports aspect, but mentally and physically. This kid never stops moving; he gives it his all, every time he’s playing. Charlie’s intensity is unmatched. He’s like the energizer bunny, he keeps going and going and going. The thing I love the most about Charlie is he’s a great person. Sports are great but I’m really into helping to develop good citizens as well. It’s all a part of the process, building these special relationships. Charlie makes it easy, special and always fun. He’s not just a client, he’s family. I love that kid with all my heart.”

Charlie, congrats on an amazing year and on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

Coach Ainsworth Minott (Coach A), I’ve learned so much from him over the years. He’s taught me so many skills, and also to always work hard and to hustle, hustle, hustle.

What is your favorite sport?

That’s a tough one. It’s a tie between basketball and football. This past year I had such great experiences on my travel basketball team through Bergen Broncos and football teams through BCFL. I have really improved my skills and had such a great time playing both sports and making amazing friends.

What is your pregame routine?

Before football and baseball games, I always put plenty of eye black on.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Winning the championship in BCFL and TBO on the same day this past Father’s Day. It was also great that when playing catcher in the TBO championship game, I threw out a runner on second base from my knees.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Yadir Molina. He always gave 100% of himself in every game he played.

What is your earliest sports memory?

On my sixth birthday, I went to a WWE match with my Dad. It’s sort of a sport.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Thinking about playing sports.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Going to Spring Training in Florida with my father to see the St. Louis Cardinals.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

Now my sister, Alex, can’t tease me by saying that she’s been a Sportstar and I haven’t.

The Humble Toast Sportstar of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Sportstar the Week to [email protected].
