The Humble Toast Sportstar of the Week: Jonah Perlmutter

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Jonah Perlmutter as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Jonah Perlmutter is a second grade Yavneh Academy student and a martial arts champion in Taekwondo under the teaching of Master James.  He is also second cousin of actor Martin Kove who plays the villainous Sensei John Kreese in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai series, from whom he gains his inspiration and skills.

Jonah, congratulations on being recognized as this week’s sportstar of the week. Who is your role model and why?

My parents are my role models because they work really hard to give me and my brothers all the things that we have.

What is your favorite sport?

When I’m not practicing martial arts, I like to shoot hoops, ride my bike and use my Hoverboard.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment was winning a gold medal at the regional Taekwondo competition in June for breaking the thickest board with my foot and my hand.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Kobe Baron, an eighth grade athlete at Yavneh Academy who has helped me learn to play basketball, football and soccer. And I’ve taught him a thing or two about self defense and breaking boards with your hands.

What is your pregame routine?

As part of my pregame routine, I throw balls to my dog Norah to make sure that she becomes a great athlete too.

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory is when I scored five points playing my first basketball game in MGBL.

What is your funniest sports memory?

Going to the New Jersey Devils playoff game with my uncle and rooting for the opposite team.

What do you like to do when you are not playing sports?

When I’m not playing sports I love to play Catan and Acquire with my older brother Nathan.  My younger brother Calvin thinks he can play, but he can’t yet.

What is your proudest sports moment?

I am really proud of winning my first belt in Taekwondo, and I’m also really proud of my dad, who plays roller hockey against teams that are much better than him.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

With my yellow belt, I can protect my brothers Nathan and Calvin if they’re ever in trouble.

The Humble Toast Sportstar of the Week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week to [email protected].
