The Humble Toast Sportstar of the Week: Joseph Ash

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Joseph Ash as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Yavneh Academy third grader has been a force in the Bergen County Flag Football League (BCFL) since its inception, with two BCFL championship trophies already in his display case. When asked about Ash, BCFL Co-Commissioner Steve Gutlove told The Jewish Link, “Joseph is not only a great player, but a great teammate. Every season his game gets better but never at the expense of his midos. He can always be counted on to make a big play, but the smile on his face when a teammate makes a big play is what makes Joseph a sportstar in my book.”

Joseph, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?

My dad and my grandpa because my dad got me into sports when I was little and started playing at 2 years old. My grandpa got me into other kinds of sports like tennis, frisbee, pool and Ping-Pong and my uncle loves to watch me play.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is football because I like being on my friends’ team. I get to play and have fun.

What is your pregame routine?

On the way to the games I like to listen to pump up music. My dad puts on songs like “Thunderstruck” and the Chicago Bulls intro.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

I won two BCFL championships and I got the All Star award for leagues this summer in camp. I will also never forget the sideline catch in the end zone at MetLife stadium to win the game.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Randy Moss because he was the fastest receiver who always made the big plays. Now they even named a move after him called “Moss’ing” someone.

What is your earliest sports memory?

When I was 2 years old, I was playing soccer and I was dribbling the ball and then I fell over the ball. I was okay though.

What is your funniest sports memory?

When I was playing a BCFL game at a Giants stadium and my sister came in her Purim costume as a Giants cheerleader.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

When I’m not playing sports I like to play with my friends and play Madden. I also like art and eating sushi.

What is your favorite sports memory?

I played with the shooting coach from the Bulls, Dave Hopla; he trained Michael Jordan. I played a 1-on-1 3-point shooting contest. The score was 5-4; he of course beat me but it was so cool!

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

The best thing is that I can be in the paper like real sports stars. I look at the stats of the pros every morning.

The Humble Toast Star of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Stars of the Week to [email protected].
