The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Sophia Heller as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The fifth grader at The Moriah School was her CMEK fall fifth grade championship team’s leader in the five major statistical categories. When asked about Sophia, Chad Mekles, director of CMEK Basketball, told The Jewish Link, “Unlike her favorite NBA player, Jayson Tatum, MVP candidate, who leads his team in four out of the five major statistics, Sophia leads our team in all five: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Statistics aside, she is the team’s undisputed on-the-court leader.”
Sophia, congrats on the championship and on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who is your role model and why?
My Dad is my role model because he teaches me about working hard, not giving up and how to be a good teammate.
What is your favorite sport?
Definitely basketball. I play in a few different leagues year round and get to hang out with my friends at the same time..
What is your pregame routine?
My pregame routine is to do our “Buzz Buzz CMEK Englewoooooood” cheer before going on the court.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment was winning the Hoop Heaven championship this year. It was especially great because we lost in the semis last year so being able to win it all felt great.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Jayson Tatum. I am a huge Celtics fan and he can do it all—score, rebound and assist.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory is when we were in first grade and we tie-dyed socks for good luck before our first championship game.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
My weirdest sports memory is when my friends and I walked into the gym and my coach was napping on a basketball.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
My favorite things to do are hanging out with my friends, dancing and going to the mall.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
The best thing about being a Sportstar is always being with my friends and watching each of our teammates, and the team as whole, continuously get better.
The Humble Toast Star of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Stars of the Week to [email protected].
