The Idea School’s Self-Portrait Gallery at the JCC

The Idea School’s 11th and 12th grade humanities classes, led by Mr. Edward Maza, launched their self-portrait exhibit with a gallery opening. This was the culmination of a second PBL unit of the year in which students read “Persepolis” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” discussed how personal narratives and self-portraits are constructed and then wrote and created their own. As an added bonus, the 12th graders are easily converting their narratives into college essays and 11th graders got practice in the medium. The ninth and 10th graders were visitors to the gallery opening. A favorite part of the gallery were the object labels, excerpts taken from the students’ narratives. And everyone enjoyed a celebratory glass of ginger ale to mark the gallery’s grand opening!
