Beginning on day one of the school year, IDEA School junior and senior students were introduced to the focus of this semester in physics: impacts and traumatic brain injuries. The students were given a design challenge to create protective devices (“helmets”) for their “eggheads,” and then tested their designs to see whether the eggs could survive the impact of a drop from different heights without cracking. They came up with some very creative and effective designs that will ultimately form the basis of creating workable prototypes for humans which will be the next phase of this project.
