The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize 20 year old Avigayil Wiener as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Yeshiva University sophomore guard set a personal career high with eight points. Wiener helped lead the charge by sinking a three to cap a 5-0 run, putting the Lady Maccabees up 9-5 with 2:28 remaining in the opening period.
Who is your role model and why?
One of my role models is my coach from high school, Susan Rifkin. She is a refined person and a brilliant coach and it’s incredible to see how much she cares about each of her players, even off the court.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
I don’t have a favorite athlete but I appreciate athletes on the shorter side who can achieve great things. For example, 5’9 Nate Robinson won the slam dunk contest three times.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory is winning gold medals in camp on Olympic day my first year in camp.
What is your funniest sports memory?
After traveling three hours to play St. Joseph’s College, the ceiling started leaking with six minutes left to the game. While the coaches and the refs were deciding what to do, girls on my team started a dance-off with other team.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Last year I played flag football in an Israeli league and I loved the feeling of running to the end zone with no one close behind me, and that reminded me of my fast breaks in basketball.
What is your favorite thing to do when not playing sports?
I love music; listening, analyzing and playing.
What is the best thing about being a sportstar?
I get to do what I love every night and further improve my skills.
The Jewish Link and Gotham Burger Sportstar of the Week will receive a $10 gift certificate to Gotham Burger. Please send nominees for upcoming Gotham Burger Sportstars of the Week to [email protected].
