The Jewish Link would like to recognize 12-year-old Sarah Silver as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The sixth grade student at Yavneh Academy, was a key contributor on the 2-2 Redhawks team that had its season cut short by COVID-19. Silver has not let quarantine time mess with her game, getting her shots in at the Hustle & Heart Sports/Bergen Broncos foul shooting league. After a terrific tournament, the Yavneh squad took the quarterfinals game in overtime with an extra eight rounds. That momentum helped them defeat SAR in the semifinals but they came up short against Moriah in the finals.
Sarah, congratulations on a great tournament. Who is your role model and why?
My grandparents for always encouraging me to the best person that I can be.
What is your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is basketball because I love the competitiveness of basketball and also the physical nature of the sport.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Qualifying and competing in the New Jersey State Swimming Junior Olympics in both freestyle and fly strokes.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Hitting a last second shot to win the game in my third grade basketball league.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Michael Jordan because he is the ultimate competitor and he never gives up.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Winning both the foul shot and also the one-on-one competition at Hustle and Heart camp last summer.
What is your pregame routine?
I take layups from each side of the basket and up the middle, then dribble through my legs and behind my back and then finally take some foul and 3-point shots.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
When I am not playing sports, I love to play my flute.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
My weirdest sports memory is from surf camp. I won “Best Wipe Out” award in surfing.
