The Jewish Link would like to recognize 10-year-old Ori and 15 year old Eli Schloss as this week’s Sportstars of the Week. The Schloss brothers each won their division and emerged as the big winners at this year’s Shomrei Torah of Fair Lawn Naftoli Aron Torah Enrichment Program Table Tennis Tournament on February 8, at 7:00 p.m.
Ori and Yehoshua, congratulations on a great tournament. Who are your role models and why?
Ori: My dad because he teaches me things like sports.
Yehoshua: My dad because he has patience in teaching me all sorts of things.
What is your favorite sport?
Ori: Hard decision between basketball and ping pong. I like to play both.
Yehoshua: Basketball and baseball.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Ori: Either winning two divisions in the Shomrei Torah Ping Pong Tournament or winning back to back championships with my basketball rec team.
Yehoshua: Winning the eighth grade championships last year with my Yeshivat Noam teammates.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Ori: Watching my brothers play backyard baseball and trying to play with them.
Yehoshua: Getting upset when kids would have unlimited strikes in instructional baseball.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Ori: Steph Curry because he is small and still good at more than one sport.
Yehoshua: My great grandmother who is, BH, able to pick up any sport and be good at it right away.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Ori: Going to a Miami Heat game, shooting a foul shot on the court and meeting Boban Marjanovic afterwards.
Yehoshua: Beating up on the Teaneck travel baseball team in the bottom of the first inning until it started pouring and the game got cancelled.
What is your pregame routine?
Ori: Stretch and hang out with my teammates.
Yehoshua: Stretch, listen to music, drink lots of water.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Ori: Reading and spending time with family and friends.
Yehoshua: Hanging out with friends and watching movies.
What is your weirdest sports memory?
Ori: Leading my team and possibly the league, in most times needed to tie my shoes during a game.
Yehoshua: Meeting Max Scherzer face to face and realizing that he has different color eyes.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Ori: Being in the paper so my great grandmother and grandmother will read it. The gift card isn’t too bad either.
Yehoshua: I am not sure yet.
