The Joel Paul Group Celebrates 30 Years of Placements in the Not-for-Profit World

Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Laws of Charity 10:7-14. “The greatest level above which there is no greater is to support a fellow Jew by endowing him with a gift or loan, or entering into a partnership with him, or finding employment for him, in order to strengthen his hand until he need no longer be dependent on others.”

When William Hochman, CEO of the Joel Paul Group, came aboard seven years ago, he brought with him nearly 30 years of leadership experience and expertise in general management, marketing and consultative sales through serving in senior capacities including Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Standard and Poor’s, and business development positions at Dun & Bradstreet. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Hochman’s passion lies with the community work that he is actively involved in through his shul and various day school and social services organizations in Bergen County and nationally. As CEO of the Joel Paul Group, Hochman saw the possibility of combining his professional expertise with his communal commitment through the recruitment of top-level professionals who will lead Jewish and secular organizations into the future.

Joel H. Paul, currently President of the Joel Paul Group, has served in multiple high-profile positions with national and international nonprofit groups for over 30 years including as Executive Director of the Hillel Foundations of Greater Philadelphia. Upon founding the Joel Paul Group in 1986, Paul combined his professional experience with his extensive knowledge of communal life and philanthropy in a mission to identify and recruit experienced professionals to serve in multiple capacities in nonprofit institutions and organizations locally and internationally.

Now, 30 years into its history, The Joel Paul Group has successfully placed hundreds of CEOs, presidents, executive directors, chief financial officers and administrative officers in both national and international organizations. Their clients come from the fields of human services, healthcare, the environment, public policy and advocacy and education. Candidates are identified through a proprietary database of thousands of nonprofit professionals and educators who have been amassed through cultivation of relationships, networking and reputation. The website www.joelpaul.com receives hundreds of hits each month with visitors primarily reviewing clients’ job descriptions and candidates submitting their resumes.

In addition to its highly successful nonprofit recruitment services, during the past 30 years, The Joel Paul Group can proudly lay claim to placing hundreds of top-level educational leaders in Jewish and non-Jewish schools throughout the world. From Heads of School to Principals, Assistant and Associate Principals, Department Heads and Chairpersons, the JPG’s placements have enhanced and advanced the educational experience of tens of thousands of young students throughout the United States and even in as far-flung corners of the world as Australia, South Africa, South America and Canada. These placements are particularly gratifying to the JPG’s administration and staff as they impact the future of our nation and culture.

Every search undertaken by the JPG serves both client and candidate optimally and individualizes the process in keeping with the particulars needs and wants of all parties. The search begins with fully understanding the goals, objectives and management style of the client. The JPG recruiters then create a comprehensive profile and selection criteria for the position. Next, the staff of the JPG networks with a broad, national pool of potential candidates and prepares a preliminary list of appropriate professionals. These candidates are carefully vetted through personal interviews, reference checking and assessment of compatibility. When the clients express interest in meeting with the proposed candidates, the JPG arranges all logistics including scheduling interviews, travel arrangements and teleconferencing if needed. When an offer is made to a candidate, the JPG assists with salary and benefit negotiations through open and cordial dialogue.

The financial arrangements for the search are done with the client exclusively. There are two possible arrangements available to the client. The first and the most popular is the retained search, in which a small retainer is paid to the JPG to undertake the search, but the client is able to search on their own as well. The true retained search requires a financial payment of a percentage of the proposed yearly salary in return for a full-service search including the vetting of candidates brought to the organization from within.

The JPG staff has extensive experience in the not-for-profit community. Many of the staff members have themselves served as executive directors, presidents and principals of well-noted institutions. “Our team fully understands the operations of organizations and accepts only a standard of high professional excellence both for itself as well as for those it represents,” shared Hochman.

Currently on staff at the JPG is Dr. Paul Shaviv, a distinguished educator with over two decades of experience as a visionary and Head of School as well as extensive experience as the representative of an international Jewish organization. His consulting services are available by visiting paulshavivconsulting.com.

Hochman is always interested in expanding his staff of recruiters with individuals who have served in top-level capacities in the nonprofit and/or educational world and are looking for the special satisfaction of enabling “shidduchim” between organizations and educational institutions with individuals of vision and commitment. “If you fall into this category, or simply want to explore the field of recruiting, we look forward to hearing from you. Please contact us at [email protected] or visit us at www.joelpaul.com.”
