The RAIN on Water Event Space Sportstar of the Week: Miri Hochberg

The Jewish Link of New Jersey and The RAIN on Water Event Space would like to recognize 14-year-old Miri Hochberg as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The eighth grader at the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey is averaging double digit points per game and is a huge part of the team’s run to the championship game. The RYNJ Jaguars coach, Shaina Gross, told the JLNJ, “Miri gives 110% on both ends of the court whether she’s playing offense or defense. She’s one of our team captains this year and she’s earned that role as she is a role model for the other players, motivating them to do their best.”

Miri, congratulations on another great season. Who is your role model and why?

My parents. They are my biggest fans and they are role models for my middos both on and off the court.

What is your favorite sport?

Basketball, because I love all the action and it’s a sport that involves teamwork.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

This year in RYNJ when we won the Yashar Lachayal tournament.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Playing baseball with my brothers in my backyard.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Kyrie Irving and Pete Alonso because I enjoy watching and learning from them. They are both star players on the teams I root for.

What is your favorite sports memory?

This year our RYNJ Jaguars team made it all the way to the championships and we were down by around 15 during the first half. Then in the second half we made a huge comeback. Although we lost by two points, I find it amazing that we were able to make it a close game and make such a big comeback.

What is your pregame routine?

Shooting around with my friends.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Hanging out with my friends and family.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

A few years ago when my family went to a Mets game, we went down behind the Mets dugout after the game and one of the players (Jose Reyes) threw up his batting gloves and I caught one of them.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

It shows that hard work really pays off.
