It is important to keep our kids active and engaged especially during this time where they are getting minimal activity. Introducing fun activities to work on essential exercises such as core strengthening, balance, motor planning and coordination is crucial to their development. Try these activities with your child and have them do it daily or weekly to see the benefits.
Balloon Balance
Blow up three balloons in different sizes. Tape three long strips of painter’s tape, sticky side out, and tape on your wall at three different heights just above the floor. Have your child stand on one foot close to the wall and slide the balloons up the wall with his/her foot until it sticks to the tape. Repeat with the other balloons. Once the balloons are stuck, have your child take his/her other foot and knock them off the wall.
You can make this even more challenging by having your children stand on a pillow instead of the hard floor. This dynamic surface challenges their balance even more.
Core Slides
Take either a bed pillow or sofa pillow and place it on the floor. Have your child stand on the pillow and place his/her hands on the floor in a push-up position. He/She will then slide his/her feet so his/her knees come up towards his/her chest. Then slide the pillow back so the legs fully extend back to the push up position. Repeat 10 times.
This exercise strengthens the arms, shoulders, core, legs and feet. It is a challenging and fun activity and will benefit each and every child.
