The Unplanned Artist: The Journey of Albert Levi

Albert Levi’s journey as an artist is as unconventional as it is inspiring. Born and raised in Kiryat Ata, near Haifa, Israel, he never imagined he would one day be an artist, let alone a successful one. His path to art was a winding road, marked by personal challenges, military service and a deep quest for inner peace.

Levi’s early years were tumultuous. He struggled in school, often labeled a “problem kid” due to his inability to conform to the rigid academic environment. Traditional education did not resonate with him, and he found it difficult to listen to others or follow directions. This rebellious streak carried over into his service in the IDF, where he served in the elite Maglan Commando Reconnaissance unit. The transition to military life was hard; his strong-minded nature often led him to trouble, as he preferred to do things his way, even if it meant facing punishment.

Levi was born into a family of artists, so perhaps it was only natural that he, too, would one day show his talent. His mother works with glass; his older sister was involved in various forms of art; and his younger sister—though only 12—is already showing signs of great imagination and skill. This environment of creativity subtly influenced him, even though he had never formally learned art himself.

Four months before his release date from the IDF in 2022, Levi felt a profound need to find peace and quiet for his soul. One Friday, on a whim, he picked up some paints and a canvas and spent hours painting. The experience was transformative. It brought him immense joy and a sense of tranquility he had never felt before. Encouraged by the experience, he began painting regularly, dedicating much of his free time to this newfound passion.

His mother, noticing his growing talent, requested a large painting for their living room. This commission marked the beginning of Levi’s more formal artistic journey. He shared his work on Facebook, and to his surprise, someone else asked for a commission. This first request opened the floodgates. He realized that his art had value, not just in monetary terms but in its ability to bring joy to others.

Initially, he sold his paintings for a minimum fee, but as his understanding of the art market grew, so did his prices. He began producing prints with hand-added color accents, allowing more people to access his work while maintaining a unique touch. His time in Kiryat Ata was productive, but life took another turn on October 7, 2023 when he was called back to the IDF reserves to help fight in the Israel-Hamas war.

For more than four months, Levi served in the reserves, fighting in Gaza and along the northern border. Even during this challenging period, he couldn’t rest during his time off, as he had art orders to fulfill. Support poured in from Jews and others worldwide, reinforcing a sense of unity and providing strength during tough times. The overwhelming support was a revelation for Levi, who still finds it hard to comprehend the depth of the global community’s solidarity.

After his reserve duty ended in February 2024 (though his unit was still on alert to be called back immediately), Levi decided to take a bold step. In April, he opened a studio and gallery in Herzliya, a nicer area close to Tel Aviv, which allowed him to work and connect with people. This studio became his sanctuary, a place where he could create and make people happy. “Making people happy, that’s my passion,” he said, spending most of his time in the studio, which he considers his other home.

Levi’s art is characterized by vibrant colors and a sense of joy. His work has not only brought him personal satisfaction but has also touched many lives. One of his newest pieces is a print of the Israeli flag, which he has proudly displayed on his social media platforms, and which can be purchased in many sizes. A notable project was a fundraiser where he created a lion in black/white and blue/white, raising an impressive $30,000 and gaining more exposure.

This young man’s journey from a troubled student to a celebrated artist in just a couple of years is a testament to the power of passion and resilience. His story reminds us that sometimes, the most fulfilling paths in life are the ones we stumble upon unexpectedly. Through his art, Levi has found his true calling, creating beauty and spreading happiness in a world that often needs it the most.
