Third Grade Students Learn Paleontology Through STEAM at Westchester Day School

Third grade students at Westchester Day School recently embarked on an exciting educational adventure that combined technology, paleontology and hands-on learning as part of their study of fossils and dinosaurs.

Using the school’s makerspace 3D printer, dinosaur fossils were crafted with bone-colored filament to create an immersive paleontology experience. Students took on the role of scientists, carefully brushing and excavating the fossils from simulated dig sites.

To enhance the activity, matching cards featuring dinosaur images and custom-designed plates were prepared, allowing students to place their uncovered fossils for further study.

This interactive experience challenged students to: Employ proper excavation techniques to uncover fossils—Identify and analyze fossil characteristics—Match fossils to corresponding dinosaur species by comparing shapes and features—Assemble their discoveries on the correct identification plates.

The activity seamlessly integrated elements of technology, scientific methodology and hands-on exploration. By aligning with Westchester Day School’s third grade curriculum on fossils, dinosaurs and trait identification, this STEAM project provided a memorable and meaningful learning experience.
