Thirty Eight Happy Tenafly Campers Attend Friends of Israel Scouting Event

Seven hundred and fifty Israeli Scouts—Tzofim from across North America – gathered in Ojai, California, to participate in a special scouting experience at Machane Shachbag where leadership, social responsibility, Zionism, and Israel issues were discussed. The camp, which takes place once a year for grades 9-12, is a popular among Israeli teens, as it gives them a chance to see how much they have in common with their fellow peers from all across the continent and to nurture their shared love and pride in Israel. Thirty-eight happy Tenafly campers attended, leaving the cold winter weather behind to explore an amazing experience with their peers in sunny California. They came back stronger, happier and more bonded with Israel than ever!

“It was incredible to see how children who were raised in America can still have such a great appreciation and a strong connection to Israel,” says Gili Grady, who works with the JCC and with Tzofim. “They make an effort to adopt the Hebrew language and learn about Israel.”

The Tzofim (Israeli Scouts) are a youth-led program for the local Israeli community who meet at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades on Sundays to share experiences and cultivate life-shaping leadership skills that will help them develop as responsible and inspiring role models for others. They take part in games, discussions, projects, camping trips, holiday celebrations, music, sports and many other fun activities, including sleepaway camp experiences where they hike and take part in scouting activities. Veteran scouts, age 15-18, serve as counselors for younger members. The program is conducted in Hebrew and currently has 150 members. New members are always welcome.
