(Courtesy of Thurnauer School of Music) New Jersey’s premier community music school, The JCC Thurnauer School of Music in Northern New Jersey, is proud to offer a full range of summer music distance-learning options for families homebound by the COVID-19 crisis. Enrollment is open to students around the country and beyond, and the program includes classes for everyone from babies to those as old as 103.
Thurnauer’s classes and lessons, taught by its distinguished faculty, provide stimulating and challenging opportunities for students to practice and enjoy music while spending limited time on screens. Summer is a perfect time to explore new musical interests. You can learn a second instrument, learn to put music technology to creative use and/or jump-start your knowledge of music theory and history. Classes and lessons begin June 29 and run through August 10.
Private lessons are available for piano, guitar, percussion, flute and every other instrument in the orchestra.
Other highlights of our summer offerings include:
“What Makes It Great? Inside the Great American Songbook from Gershwin to Sondheim.” A class taught by Rob Kapilow, artist-in-residence and renowned composer, conductor, author and PBS/NPR commentator. Kapilow brings the joy and wonder of classical music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. In a seven-week session, he will focus on the giants of the Great American Songbook including George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
Musikgarten Classes are available for babies through age 7.
Music theory classes help enrich a student’s musical knowledge and speed their progress in private instrumental lessons.
Instrument-focused workshops are available for guitar, viola, saxophone, flute and flamenco guitar.
Ensemble workshops are available for chorus, jazz and chamber music.
Classes on electronic music technology, rhythmic poetry/spoken word, jazz history and composition will also be available.
