The following are excerpts from “Crime Proof: Think Like a Criminal and Beat Them at Their Own Game” by Anthony P. Colandro.
Gun storage and one’s particular needs are something that is very personal. What works for you may not work for your neighbor. Something to keep in mind is that each state has their own storage laws, and it is up to you as a responsible firearms owner to know and abide by the laws. Beyond what is lawful, you have a moral obligation to keep your firearms inaccessible from authorized persons and children. When you are shopping for a safe, do your research. Online, you can find all kinds of reviews and even videos of people trying to break into different gun storage options.
Having a firearm in your home can be simple, all you need to do is invest in a fireproof safe. But it must be inaccessible from people’s eyes. Safes just scream, “I have valuable stuff in me.” Any guns that you have in the house that are not for immediate access should have a trigger lock or be locked in a safe. Every firearm sold in the US comes with a trigger or cable lock. Every police department has locks for free. Most ranges offer cable locks for free. Project Childsafe®, a program with the National Shooting Sports Foundation, will also supply these trigger locks free of charge. There is absolutely no excuse not to have a trigger lock on any of your firearms.
You don’t want to keep a firearm in a too dry or too humid location. The NRA recommends a 70 degree temperature and 50% relative humidity as steel can start to rust over 50%.
