Step 3: Before I qualify, I’d like lessons or to practice with my carry gun. (See Tip #6 from August 8, 2024)

Step 4: I need to shoot the qualification course.

Step 5: I’m ready to apply for my carry license online.

This week we are discussing Step 4:

Step 4: I need to shoot the qualification course.

To obtain a NJ CCW permit, the state requires all applicants to qualify under the CCARE (Civilian Carry Assessment and Range Evaluation) protocol. This 1-hour qualification is held at Gun For Hire and includes both range and classroom time. In the range, you will demonstrate familiarity with the safe handling of your firearm, a short holster draw safety review and shoot the CCW course of fire which uses 50 rounds of ammo. After you pass the range qualification, you proceed to the classroom for the Use of Force presentation. After completing the training you will be given a certificate. All of our instructors are PTC, NRA and LE certified. Gun For Hire has been qualifying security, private carry, and retired police since 1992.

There are no course prerequisites for the NJ CCW Carry Qualification. Please note this is not a beginner qualification. You must have general safety / operational / holster drawing knowledge of your firearm.

Once you have successfully completed our NJ CCARE Protocol qualification, you will receive the passing certificate, also known as the SP182 form. This form is valid for two years, and you will need to upload it to the NJSP portal when you apply for your carry permit. Gun For Hire Pro Tip: Make sure to take a photo, front and back, of your form SP182 so you always have it even if you lose the paper.

Watch and sign up for the qualification! If you visit GunForHire.com/njccw we have a fantastic, in-depth video that will walk you through, step-by-step the CCARE protocol qualification. Watch along with Gun For Hire owner Matt, and Director of Training Tony as they answer the most common CCW qualification questions.
