Tip #9 of 52 From Gun For Hire: Staying Safe During Back to School

As the summer winds down and as students head back to school, ensuring their safety is crucial. Here are some essential back-to-school safety tips:

  1. Know Your Route: Before school begins, especially if your child is attending a new school, familiarize yourself with the route to and from school. If walking or biking, use safe crosswalks and avoid distractions like phones or headphones.
  2. Obey Traffic Rules: Remind your kids, always look both ways before crossing the street, use pedestrian crossings, and wait for the green light if crossing at intersections. During peak school hours, municipalities will have crossing guards at all major walkways on school routes.
  3. Wear Safety Gear: If your child will be biking to school with friends, remind them to always wear their helmet and watch out for cars. Even when biking, continue to obey all traffic rules and cross at safe crossways.
  4. Stay Aware: Avoid talking to strangers or accepting rides from people you don’t know. If you’re feeling uncomfortable or unsafe, seek help from a trusted adult.
  5. Emergency Contacts: If your child has a cell phone, ensure they have a list of contacts in case of an emergency. If your child does not have a cell phone, laminate a list of trusted contacts they can keep in their backpack.
  6. Discuss Online Safety: In today’s digital age, children have more access to the internet than ever before. Make sure to take the time to talk about the importance of keeping personal information private online and how to handle cyberbullying.

By keeping these tips in mind, everyone can contribute to a safer and smoother back-to-school transition.

Now that your children are back in school, take the time to brush up on your education as well. Safety goes far beyond owning a firearm. From something as simple as reading “Crime Proof: Think Like A Criminal And Beat Them At Their Own Game” by Anthony P. Colandro, to taking a stun gun or mace course, to going for your NJ CCW permit, there are many steps you can take to ensure you and your family stay safe.
