The sports marketing classes at Touro Universities’ Lander College for Men and Lander College for Women attended the recent New Jersey Devils game vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning. Prior to the game we were given a tour of the Prudential Center including the Devils’ locker room, the visitors’ locker room, the press room and the penalty box off the ice. We also had two speakers from the Devils organization to talk about sports marketing and how they work to get people to attend the games. This includes game promotions like we attended. We were promised to be invited to next year’s Jewish Heritage Day, usually by Chanukah time. We were given vouchers for $120 to buy food and drink.
The game was exciting as Tampa Bay scored first with the Devils tying it up at 1–1. Then Tampa went up 2-1 and the Devils tied it again 2-2. With three minutes to go, Tampa went up 3-2 and it looked grim for the Devils, but they managed to come back and tie it at 3-3, with only seconds to spare. In the five minute overtime, no one scored, so it went to a shootout. Unfortunately the Lightning scored two goals to the Devils’ one and TB won 4-3, but the Devils earned a point. We then had an exciting opportunity to go on the ice arranged by our excellent Devils representative. We also were given Devils bags with two T-Shirts, a Jack Hughes card (he is a star and Jewish) and a necklace/keychain.
The Lander College students learned much about sports marketing while enjoying a trip to a sporting event. More events and speakers are scheduled with Stan Kasten, president of the Los Angeles Dodgers, scheduled to speak on Thursday March 23.
