ECD children often ask each other, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Yavneh Academy classrooms have dramatic play centers equipped with costumes of different community helpers, and figures that represent different jobs. The favorite among the children are firefighters, police officers, and doctors. As part of their learning, Yavneh often brings experts in the field to explain what they do, show us what they do, and of course answer our questions. To help best understand community helpers, and emergency responders, the ECD had a Transportation Day. Ambulances, fire trucks, police vans and vehicles, emergency and vehicles to clean up the streets all showed up at the school.
The experts—policemen, firefighters, EMT workers etc.—showed the students what is housed in their vehicles, how they are used, as well as their specific purpose and job. They even let the children go onto the vehicles, and understand how it feels first-hand. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed their appreciation to all of the visitors.
