Trending Summer Cuts for Any Hair or Wig Length

The key to any hair/wig cut or style is to make you feel comfortable and confident in your appearance. When you feel confident about your appearance, it allows for your inner beauty to truly shine, allowing you to radiate an overall more beautiful look.

Long hairstyles this summer will focus on healthy, shiny hair with added highlights for a sparkling effect. Chances are if you have very long hair or a wig, you’re emotionally attached to it and not interested in removing length. You’re simply looking for an easy and comfortable way to manage the length in this summer heat.

It’s easy to liven up your summer hair/wig, while still keeping the length with just a few modifications. Thinning the wig will make it more comfortable and lighter for the summer. Less density in the wig, allows for an easy and light pony tail as well. Thinning wigs can be done in two ways. The first is by removing wefts in the wig. The wefts can be kept and added back into the wig when wanting a thicker look. The second is by using thinning shears. When using thinning shears the hair can not be replaced back into the wig. Subtle layers can also be added so that the hair/wig appears lighter and doesn’t have that heavy weighed down look.

Highlights always add a more summery look and feel to long heavy hair. Thinner strands of highlights, that are placed around the hairline and the crown of the head offer a fresh, summery, sun-kissed look while larger chunks of highlights give off a stronger, more dramatic effect. Adding color to your hair usually gives it more body. You do not need a dramatic change in cut this summer to achieve these summer looks.

Medium length hairstyles and wigs have become so popular because they offer a similar look as long hairstyles, however they are easier to manage and in wigs are much lighter on the head and more affordable than the very long wigs! Many women love long hair and wigs, however they find them impractical when running errands or spending active time with the kids. Therefore, many women opt to go a bit shorter and jazz up the medium style cut with trendy highlights and a texturized layered cut. In addition, medium length hairstyles can offer more volume, body and texture than long hair, since the heavy weight in long hair quickly weighs down the hair and style.

Many of my clients come to me with split ends and dead looking long wigs. If you have a wig like this consider revamping it with a cut and transform your long lifeless wig into a more comfortable and cooler medium style cut this summer. A popular medium length cut this summer will be the “modern shag,” as it’s full of texture and movement and the layers keep the hair from looking too heavy. This cut looks great on wigs!

Short hairstyles are most the popular in the summer. But considering the fact that unlike hair, wigs do not grow back, these shorter styles make wig wearers fearful of going too short. Since short hairstyles offer such a fun and comfortable summer look, I would recommend either buying a short wig (it’s more affordable than you think!), or taking an older wig and transforming it with a short cut to keep you cool all summer long. This year’s version of the bob is blunt and hits at the jawline and when tucked behind the ear it gives an a-line effect. This cut gives a very full look to thin hair so if you plan on doing it to a wig be sure the cutter knows how to properly thin wigs so that the hair won’t look too full and wiggy. This cut can be altered to fit almost any face shape. For longer face shapes add more volume to the sides. For round or angular face shapes leave just a bit more length. This cut looks very chic with silky straight hair or it can look fun and flirty with some beachy wave texture. When cutting wigs short, be sure not to cut them too short, lest the net be visible. Also, those with round faces need to keep a bit more length to prevent their faces from looking “boyish.” As always consult your hairstylist as to which look and cut works best for your face shape.
