The landscape of design is always changing. Designers are constantly inspired and affected by the world around them. Trends in fashion slowly make their way into Interior Design. You may see a gingham dress on the runway and then several months later see gingham on a sofa. Taffeta on a gown and later on a drapery panel. Similarly, trends in color and texture of jewelry and fashion accessories make their way into home accessories. So how can we incorporate these new trends into our homes?

It’s very exciting and tempting to follow every new trend. Buying the new sweater you’ve been eyeing in a store window or a trendy new pair of sunglasses is a great way to keep up with new styles. So how do you know when and which trends to follow in your home? You don’t want to be trading in your sofa as often as your sweater!

Paint is a great way to keep your space updated. Paint can be changed every few years in order to look fresh and clean, so when trying to update your look, selecting trending colors in high-traffic areas can really change your look. Today’s looks are favoring neutrals, with grays being very popular. If you don’t have the budget to redo your entire room, changing the paint color can give the room a whole new look.

Adding dimension to walls with textured wall coverings such as sea grass or linen is a great way to add depth and style to a room. Metallic finishes and patterns are also very popular on wall coverings. Adding wallpaper to just one accent wall is a popular trend that will update a room without needing to overhaul it completely. Pick the wall that is opposite the entrance to the room to make the most impact.

For more expensive items such as sofas and window treatments, I suggest selecting classic shapes and colors. Go with a color that you love and will never tire of or a neutral for added versatility. In addition to neutrals some colors will always be classics. Navy, for example, if you favor saturated color, is a great alternative to a beige or gray while still staying timeless.

Then where do we add the punch and pick up on the latest trends? Smaller upholstered items such as a stool or bench, which don’t require as much of an investment, are a great way to add trending colors and textures. Similarly, pillows or a throw can be changed out seasonally or when they begin to wear. These accent pieces are a great place to add a color or pattern that might be too bold on a larger piece. A shag rug might seem like too much but a shag pillow is fun and trendy!

Just like your wardrobe needs a classic black dress and some new pieces mixed in, so too your home needs to maintain a lasting sense of style while making changes to keep the look of it updated. Give your home the fresh look it deserves with a new coat of paint in an updated color and by adding trending accent pieces. Like the glittery purse with your classic black dress, making a change in your style will make a change in the look of your home.
