The Macs were given all they could handle Sunday afternoon at the MSAC, as Manhattanville came off the bus ready to compete. The Macs were challenged against a well-prepared, energetic Valiants team as they fell behind early, trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half. Yeshiva bounced back in the second half behind a historic performance from Ryan Turell who finished with 51 points, a Yeshiva Maccabee record, including 33 in the second half. Turell’s scoring and better defense in the second half led to a 78-56 win for the Macs.

How it happened:

The Macs got started on a jumper off the glass from Turell to give them a 2-0 lead.

Mike Granda’s 3-pointer gave the Valiants an 11-10 lead with 12:20 left in the half.

Petey Galgano’s jumper capped off a 15-2 run for the Valiants and gave the Valiants their biggest lead at 28-16 with 5 minutes to go in the first half.

Back-to-back threes from Turell cut the lead to 30-22 in favor of the Valiants with 3:20 left in the half.

Ofek Reef’s layup cut the Valiants’ lead to 32-26 at halftime.

Turell had 18 of the Macs’ 26 first half points.

Turell’s 3-pointer gave the Macs the lead back at 40-38 with 15 minutes to play.

Turell’s fourth 3-pointer of the game capped off a 13-0 run for the Macs and gave them a 48-38 lead with 11 minutes to go.

Reef capitalized on a fastbreak opportunity, completing a three-point play to give the Macs a 62-48 lead.

A layup and short jumper from Turell gave him the single game scoring record for YU at 51 points.

Ryan Turell’s Huge Performance:

With the Macs missing Eitan Halpert and Ethan Lasko, Turell took on an even bigger scoring role than usual. He was able to get to his spots and connect on shots both inside and outside the paint. Turell was particularly effective posting up the smaller guards of Manhattanville, something the Macs went to a lot during the second half.

Scoring on the Fastbreak:

The Macs were able to get out and run in transition which led to some easy baskets. This was even more important in this game since the offense was struggling in the halfcourt. The Macs had 17 fastbreak points in the win while allowing just nine fastbreak points to Manhattanville.

Second Half Shooting:

The Macs struggled in the first half, specifically on the offensive end. The Macs shot just 44.4% overall and 2-11 from behind the arc in the first half. This led to the Macs having their lowest scoring half of the season. But the Macs responded in the second half shooting 63% overall and 6-11 from the three. The Macs combined a strong second half shooting performance with heightened defensive intensity which allowed them to pull away down the stretch of this game.

For Manhattanville (3-3, 0-1):

Tommy Lotito led the Valiants with 13 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Jake Dunn and Connor Yetman both finished with nine points in the game.

The Valiants shot 45% overall and 3-13 from the three.

For Yeshiva (8-0, 5-0):

Ryan Turell led the Macs with 51 points and four rebounds.

Ofek Reef finished with 13 points.

Gabe Leifer did a little of everything finishing with three points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

The Macs shot 54.4% overall and 36% from the three.

Up next, the Macs will travel to Farmingdale, New York to take on the Farmingdale State Rams on Wednesday night. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.
