Turnips Turn Up…Eventually

Dear Shayna B.,

First of all we want to say that we are HUGE fans! We love reading your advice in the newspaper every week! We have a big problem! Our turnips in our garden won’t grow! We watered them and put them in the sun but they won’t grow. It’s very hard being patient. Please help us Shayna!!!!

Sincerely,
Not Growing Gardens

Dear Not Growing Gardens,

Turnips only take 40 to 55 days to grow after planting so consider yourself lucky. Although that may sound like a long time the Magnolia grandiflora can take up to 50 years to fully grow. And that doesn’t even produce anything edible. In this case, you get to enjoy tasty (yuck!) turnips. Just think, 50 days is really only 1,200 hours. Don’t you feel better? No?

Why not? You think 1,200 hours are too many? Well it’s really only 72,000 minutes! And only 4,320,000 seconds! This isn’t helping? Then read a book, watch a movie and annoy your siblings. If that doesn’t work then my advice to you is to plant radishes. After all, everyone knows it only takes them 36,000 minutes to grow!

Shayna is a fourth grader and understands what kids in elementary school are going through. She is happy to help others navigate this tricky time. She can be reached at [email protected]. She is looking forward to hearing from you soon.
