The Township of Teaneck is fortunate to be served by a dedicated group of volunteers who provide 911 ambulance services free of charge. For 86 years, the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps (TVAC) has proudly served the community with professionalism, compassion and commitment.
As National EMS Week continues through Sunday, TVAC is excited to celebrate more than eight decades of service alongside its neighbors.
“EMS Week is much more than just thanking EMTs for their service,” said Ezra Finkelstein, TVAC Lieutenant of Special Operations. “It’s about celebrating those who choose to make a difference every day—and encouraging others to do the same.”
To mark the occasion, TVAC is once again hosting a communitywide block party.
“I’d like to personally invite everyone to our annual EMS Block Party at the TVAC building on Sunday, May 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” said TVAC President Rabbi Daniel Senter. “There will be fun and activities for all.”
Now in its second year, the EMS Week Block Party promises to be bigger and better than ever. The event will feature food, music, bounce houses, balloon animals, emergency vehicles, a train ride, and even a petting zoo.

In addition to the festivities, TVAC is launching its EMS Week fundraiser. As a completely volunteer-run organization, TVAC does not bill for its services, and none of its members receive any compensation for their time.
“During EMS Appreciation Week, we turn to you—our community—for support to help us continue our life-saving work,” Rabbi Senter said. TVAC hopes to raise $75,000, with every dollar directly going towards saving lives.
Founded 86 years ago, TVAC has grown to include over 200 members from Teaneck and neighboring towns. In 2024, TVAC’s members responded to almost 4,800 calls, making it the busiest year in the corps’ history.
“It has been my pleasure to serve with TVAC for nearly 20 years and as president for the past three,” said Rabbi Senter. “I have the honor of riding alongside incredibly dedicated volunteers each week. Despite their busy lives, our members consistently give at least four hours a week—and often much more—to help their friends and neighbors.”
For many members, TVAC has been a life-changing experience.
“When I was in high school, my uncle—a paramedic and role model—encouraged me to join TVAC,” said TVAC member Jacob Silberberg. “That decision changed my life. Being part of a team, helping people during their worst moments, and learning to stay calm under pressure taught me invaluable life skills.”
Life member Deidre Regan Colasuono shared similar sentiments. “TVAC has given me a family, a purpose, and a place to belong,” she said. “I continue to volunteer not just because of the bonds I’ve formed, but because of the lives I’ve touched—and the countless more I hope to impact.”
“While our members come from diverse backgrounds and span a wide range of ages, we are united by a shared desire to serve our community,” Rabbi Senter added.
