I would like to thank The Link for allowing its letters section to be a beacon for free speech. Last week was an extraordinary example of permitting free speech, when it published the letter by Michael Rogovin (“Setting the Record Straight,” September 5, 2024), which was a diatribe full of misinformation and lies.
The letter started by defending the nomination of Kamala Harris, mixing the electoral college up with the candidate nominating process, completely overlooking the fact that Joe Biden did not voluntarily withdraw his presidential candidacy. President Biden was pressured and threatened with God knows what consequences by a group of unelected people who apparently control the Democratic party, and possibly the United States government. This was a coup, not a normal and ordinary part of the nomination process as suggested by Rogovin.
The article then goes on to suggest that Biden has been a pro-Israel president, and that there is no reason to think that Harris’ administration would be any different; and it suggests that there is little difference between the two political parties when it comes to their positions on Israel. Again, Rogovin ignores reality.
Biden has not been a pro-Israel president. He may say he is pro-Israel, but those are empty words. Biden allowed October 7 to happen by giving Iran access to billions of dollars. Of note, Iran was in no position to finance the terror that it has been financing when Biden took office, because the prior president, who happens to be running for president in this election, imposed and effectively enforced crippling sanctions against Iran.
The only thing that Rogovin was correct about was that it is highly speculative to think he knows what Harris’ position on Israel will be. This is because as I am writing this, she has not given a single press conference, live interview or even had a moment that was not fully scripted since announcing her intention to run for president.
But in the name of speculation, we can make some reasonable assumptions. At the outset, the typical anti-Israel Democratic operatives all seem content with Harriss’ candidacy. She has the backing of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Bernie Sanders. She overlooked Josh Shapiro as a VP choice in exchange for Tim Walz, a decision that was touted by the anti-American in Congress, Ilhan Omar. Harris has the support of Abdullah Hammoud, the mayor of Dearborn, Michigan, whom she has met with privately on two separate occasions since declaring her candidacy. We also know that Harris said that she could see herself backing an arms embargo against Israel, only for members of her staff to back away from this position. Thus, it is fair to question what positions a Harris administration would take towards Israel.
Additionally, regardless of what Harris’ intentions would be towards Israel, it is reasonable to believe that her policies might be dangerous for Israel, even if that would not be her intention.
On the other hand, what we know about Donald Trump is not speculative. Not only was his administration more pro-Israel than any administration in the short history of the State of Israel, but Israel was much less dependent on the United States during the Trump administration because the world was a much safer place for Israel, the United States and all our allies because Trump’s policies kept us safe.
These are the facts. Everything here is true. If there was any merit to Rogovin’s position, why did his letter have to be full of misinformation? Regardless of whether you are a Republican or Democrat, Trump is the only choice for president this November.
