The Challenge: How can I build a bridge that could span 60 cm (2 ft) and hold a lot of weight? Westchester Day School children in grades one through eight were given identical bags of materials: straws, strings, popsicle sticks and more. Amazingly, the winning bridge held 41 pounds! The students worked so hard and put the engineering process to work as they planned, built and revised. Prior to today’s activity, they had learned about different types of bridges in science class and done some activities about how to make structures strong. Ganon and kindergarten students built bridges in their classrooms and tested their strength with pennies. They also visited the older students to see their final bridges in action. It was a great day full of learning and teamwork!
