WDS dedicated this past week to Shavua Ha-Safa Ha-Ivrit, The Week of the Hebrew Language, in honor of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the creator of modern Hebrew, whose birthday was on the 21st of Tevet. WDS students had the opportunity to engage in exciting activities and topics relating to the Hebrew language. Middle school students, who have been learning about Eliezer Ben Yehuda throughout the school year, enhanced the learning by listening to many Israeli songs. They also researched and learned about some of the vocabulary that Eliezer Ben Yehuda created and played various Hebrew games including matching synonyms, antonyms and Hebrew quotes together to help enrich their vocabulary. In second through fifth grades, students learned his life story and the importance of Hebrew in Eretz Yisrael. They then created postage stamps highlighting a favorite Hebrew word of their choice, played word games and drew pictures incorporating Hebrew vocabulary. Overall, the students were fortunate to experience an enjoyable week with WDS faculty and shlichot, while also learning about several topics related to the Hebrew language.
