Women’s Initiative for Jewish Studies (WIJS) at Young Israel of New Rochelle is proud to present Dr. Jordan Katz on Wednesday, January 11 at 8 p.m. (ET) on Zoom. She will be the fifth speaker of the 2022-2023 season in the monthly scholarly programming offered by WIJS at YINR.
Dr. Katz’s topic will be “Naming and Shaming: Illegitimate Births Among Early Modern Jews.” The lecture will explore the phenomenon of illegitimate pregnancies in early modern Jewish communities, showing how communities dealt with this issue and what the ramifications were for the women who experienced it.
Dr. Jordan Katz is assistant professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is a historian of early modern Jewry, with a focus on Jewish cultural history, history of medicine, and women and gender in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Her work has been published in Jewish Social Studies and the Jewish Quarterly Review, and her current book project examines the role of Jewish midwives within communal, intellectual, and medical frameworks in the early modern Ashkenazic world.
