Beit Semesh—Haaretz reports that ultra-haredim in Beoit Shemesh have again posted warning signs to women about the way they dress on two government funded health clinics. The signs read: “Dire Warning: It is forbidden to walk on our streets in immodest dress, including slutty clothing worn in a religious style.” It is signed “residents of the neighborhood.” According to the report, “this sign’s reference to indecent or provocative dress that conform to Orthodox Jewish guidelines is …highly unusual. It evokes the tension not only between the extreme haredi elements in the city and the secular population, but also between the extremist haredis and the Modern Orthodox/religious Zionist population.” Dr. Eve Finkelstein, who works at another Meuhedet clinic found the signs “aggressive” and “shocking.” She reports that the signs are scaring patients, who come to the clinics from around the region. Beit Shemesh is being sued for refusing to take down the posters and for creating an environment where women feel threatened.
