Before the World’s Largest Menorah was lit in New York City this Chanukah, Rabbi Velvl Butman, who led the ceremony, shared words of wisdom that reminded me of words spoken by my grandmother, ob”m. Rabbi Butman said, “The Rebbe always taught that if you’re not feeling well, then go do good things and that will bring you blessing and you’ll feel better about yourself.”
The first public menorah was lit by Chabad at Independence Mall in Philadelphia 50 years ago.
The following were the words spoken by Rabbi Butman on this memorable occasion:
Tonight, as we light the World’s Largest Menorah, we are inspired by the courage of the Maccabees and we proudly proclaim that their spirit and faith lives on in each and every one of us. From these menorah heights we proudly proclaim to the world: Am Yisroel Chai! The Jewish people are alive and proud. We are proud Jews. We are an eternal nation. We stand united together as one! We stand with our heads held high and tall. We honor and cherish every human being, regardless of race color or creed! Every human being is created as a reflection of the Creator! We are all one under one God!
We pray for the well-being and safe return of the hostages of Israel to their families. May these Chanukah lights of the World’s Largest Menorah, usher in the eternal lights of the third Temple in Yerushalayim, Israel and bring joy, hope, healing and everlasting peace to our world. Happy Chanukah!
