Third graders at Westchester Torah Academy have been learning about different types of measurement in science. They began their discovery through finding objects to measure in inches and centimeters. Students learned and mastered the technique of using a ruler to measure, and enjoyed finding objects around the room to test their new skill.
Students then moved on to more exciting science experiments! The first experiment was about measuring items using weight. Students used a scale to compare items and measure how many grams each item weighed. They weighed a lump of clay, a small wooden block, scissors, an eraser and even a tennis ball. Students were surprised to learn the results, and see how much each item weighed! For their second experiment, students learned about how to measure using different tools, such as a graduated cylinder and a beaker. They used the tools to find the volume of different cups of water, and learned the interesting fact that as long as you measure a liquid with the same units of measure it does not matter the type of measuring tool you use.
