Yavneh Academy Gan students celebrated Earth Day all week with lessons and activities to help understand the importance of taking care of our planet. After reading “Garbage Galore” by Ellen Lawrence, they gained a new appreciation for the mitzvah of bal tashchit, as the students discovered where all garbage goes after it’s taken away in garbage trucks. They learned about landfills and how some garbage stays in the ground for many, many years and they discussed ways to try to throw away less garbage. As a follow up lesson in “being a part of the solution,” the children helped to clean up the trash around the school grounds. It was great to see such enthusiasm as the children ran around with gloves and bags.
