Yavneh Academy seventh graders participated in the annual Outsiders Day, where the students dress up as characters from the novel The Outsiders. The students chose whether they dress up as “Greasers,” the group from the rundown side of town who seem to be perpetually in trouble with the law, or as “Socs,” the kids who seem to get all the breaks and only get their names in the paper for their achievements. The seventh grade wing was filled with girls in plaid skirts and boys in madras shirts, hair piled high or greased to the side. A graffiti wall adorned both Mrs. Borenstein’s and Mr. Novick’s room, where the Greasers and Socs could write messages to each other, putting the 1960s slang they learned in their reading to good use. Moving forward, this year saw the release of a new film version of West Side Story, which can serve as a bridge between this novel and the classic Romeo and Juliet the seventh graders will be reading later in the year.
